Silver can get passed down through generations and hold significant meaning to heritage or cultural significance. The value of silver can be affected by these factors, mainly if it dictates a particular area and is sold to a silver merchant from that location. We accept extensive collections of silver items or hallmarked silver pieces. However, suppose you cannot find a hallmark. In that case, there is a possibility your item is still silver, and we recommend getting in touch for us to evaluate it.
Silver is a material with intrinsic value and long-lasting monetary prospects. Of course, its value fluctuates with the market, but it can be guaranteed to remain a stable metal that can bring profit if bought and sold at the right moments in the right call. This is because silver has a melting value. However silver plate doesn't.Unfortunately, we are currently not accepting silver plates unless sent with a larger amount of items.
Silver will have markings to help you determine if it is genuine silver or fake. Often, the number "925, 900 or 800" or "sterling" are the authentic hallmarks of silver and indicate the purity level. The stamp shows the purity of the silver to be sold in commercial settings, with sterling silver having a purity level of 92.5% or higher and representing the manufacturer or silversmith mark. Each region of the UK bears different hallmarks and can be identified with an easy internet search. The hallmark should be accompanied by the date of manufacture, and any additional information about the piece may also be found here.
Another method you can use to investigate your silver piece is a magnet. Most precious metals are non-magnetic. If your magnets hold firmly to the item, you can confirm this is not silver but made up of other metals to give the impression of silver. Another way to test your silver is to notice if it has a significant odour, as real silver is odourless. Sulphur or metallic scents indicate the presence of other metals.
Of course, you do not need to test the silver yourself. Instead, Pack It Post It can test and evaluate the items for you.
